Mary T. Veker, age 87 of L’Anse, MI passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital with her good friends by her side.
She was born July 16, 1930 in Philadelphia, PA daughter of James and Maria (Lynch) Coyle. In 1946 Mary graduated from Immaculate Heart Academy in Fountain Springs, PA. She received a degree in nursing from University of Pennsylvania and then a master’s degree in Nursing from Wayne State University. Mary was a Naval Nurse when she met Norval John Veker and in 1961 they married in Waukegan, IL. She was a senior staff member for the Western U.P. Health Department in L’Anse.
Mary was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Lake Superior Beagle Club, Baraga County Democrats, and involved with Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. She loved classical music, traveling, and fishing in Canada.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband Norval in 2016; son John Veker in 1991; daughter Patricia Veker in 2006.
She is survived by numerous cousins, neighbors, and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 8th from 12-1 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home. Her funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. with Fr. Corey Litzner officiating. Burial will be in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery in the spring.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Copper Country Humane Society, Lake Superior Beagle Club, American Diabetes Association, or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
