Obituary: Mary Louise Kostamo

Mary Louise Kostamo, age 59, of Pelkie, MI passed away on Saturday, August 13th, 2022 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI.

She was born March 7, 1963 in L’Anse, MI daughter of George and Betty (Barbano) Rantanen. Mary graduated from L’Anse High School in 1982. She married Wayne Kostamo on May 12, 1982. She worked at the Ojibwa Casino, starting out as a Blackjack dealer, then a cashier, and was currently a Cage Manager in Baraga and Marquette.

Mary played third base in the softball league for Big Buck’s Best. She enjoyed beading, crafting, scrap booking, and going to auctions. Mary, whom was known as “Weezie” to most, but “Auntie Wee Wee” to her nieces and nephews, will be remembered for being loving, caring, funny, generous, giving, and having a big heart. She had a way of making a person be heard and loved even if you weren’t family.

Surviving are her son Wayne (Katherine) Kostamo of Baraga; grandson Shane Kostamo; brothers, Walter (Avis) Leinonen of L’Anse, David (Chris) Rantanen of Manistique; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her parents George and Betty Rantanen; husband Wayne Kostamo; brother Randall Rantanen; sisters, Paula Rantanen, Gladys Rantanen, and infant sister Marion Rantanen.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 23rd at 11:00 a.m. at the Indian Pinery Cemetery in L’Anse with Pastor Mark Miller officiating and Native ceremonial drumming. A luncheon will follow in the KBIC Zeba Hall. Jacobson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
