It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Kathryn (Bonen) O’Connell announce her passing on May 1st at the age of 61 following a brief battle with cancer.
Born in Laurium, Michigan, Mary attended Sacred Heart Central School for her primary education and later graduated from Calumet High School in 1980.
Mary is survived by her loving and adored husband, Sean, sisters; Diane ( the late Pete) Starr, Lori (Barry) Moreland and Patti (the late Tim) Lorenson. She is predeceased by her beloved parents Dorothy and Benedict Bonen. She is survived by many admiring nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A people person at heart, Mary had a special knack for helping others, excelling in the service industry. One of her early jobs was serving at the Red Garter Inn in Calumet, a foundational beginning and a place that she loved. It paved the way for a career in sales, first in furniture and later in the auto industry which spanned nearly 20 years. Mary specialized in selling trucks, especially Dodge Rams. She knew more about trucks than any of her “fellow” salesmen creating a dedicated, repeat client base.
Mary moved from the Upper Peninsula to California in 1989 where she married her one true love on September 1, 1990. Briefly, she and Sean lived in Tacoma, Washington, returning to Michigan in 1992 making their home in Clinton Township.
A natural hostess and excellent chef, Mary loved to gather friends together, connecting with those close to her and celebrating life with zest. Whether at home or at a destination, she would add a special, uniquely thoughtful touch that enhanced the festivities. An artist, her talent spilled over into her personal style from her home, her garden and in the parties she threw. Mary was the perfect hostess up until her last days.
Her special place was the water, particularly the Caribbean, if not there, a cruise with friends, if at home, floating in her pool. Friends were cherished and often joined her on her travel adventures.
She also cherished her fur babies, Dobermans Lola and Lexi. They brightened her days and kept her company until the end.
Mary was a loyal friend with a huge heart. Her many titles were Auntie, sister and friend but her favorite role was Sean’s wife and life partner.
Mary will be missed by many as she was loved by all.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 5, 2023 from 3 to 9 pm in Sterling Heights, Michigan at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons.
