Hubbell: Mary Bernadette “Bernie” Genovesi, 98, of Hubbell passed away with family by her side on Friday, March 6, 2020 due to failing health from an October 20, 2019 stroke. For the past four months, she was a resident at Canal View, Hancock, Michigan.
Bernadette was born in Hubbell on May 11, 1921, the first-born of ten children of Veronica and Wilfred Poisson. She was a member of Saint Cecilia Parish and attended St. Cecilia Catholic School in Hubbell for eight years and then graduated from Lake Linden-Hubbell High School in 1939. She almost had a perfect high school attendance except for the one day her mom asked her to stay home to help with chores. That was the day the 10th child, Robert, was born.
While an employee operating the cash register at the Montgomery Wards Store in Houghton, Michigan, her boss introduced her to a new employee, Arnold Genovesi, and asked her to show him how to use the cash register. With his first paycheck, he bought a 10” cast iron frying pan and gave it to her. Today, that fry pan looks as good as new and is still in her kitchen. The family enjoyed many delicious meals of fried chicken cooked in that pan.
Bernadette and Arnold were married on June 10, 1944 in the St. Cecilia Church in Hubbell, Michigan and resided in Hubbell for most of their life. She was a loving wife and mom who devoted her life to caring for her family.
She is survived by her three children:

Sue (Bob) Haralson: Children Michelle Gagnon and Nicky Outinen (Wayne Kokkonen): her children: Jeremy Outinen (Maddie James) and Kimberly Outinen (Erik Carlson).
Mary (Ron) Gaulin: Children Jim (Maria) Gaulin, their children Abbie and Patrick
Wendy (Eric) Scherdell, Child Kayleigh Gaulin and her child, Kendall Grace DeLap.
Sister-in-law and cherished friend, Sharon (Robert) Poisson; Sister-in-law Barbara (Joseph) Genovesi and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bernadette was preceded in death by her parents, Veronica and Wilfred; her nine siblings: brother Herman who was killed in the Korean War; and brothers: Joseph, Robert, Jerome and Francis; and her four sisters: Marie, Patricia, Dolores and Mary Antoinette.
The family would like to thank the Aspirus Keweenaw staff for all their care and compassion and the Canal View Staff for providing excellent care to make “Bernie” feel loved and comfortable in her new home.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, March 12, 2020 at the Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden. There will be no public visitation. The Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden is in charge of arrangements.
Priests of the Marquette Diocese are welcomed to concelebrate the Mass. Please bring a White stole and alb.
