As received from Memorial Chapel Funeral and Cremation Service:
Marilyn Carole Carlson, 83, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed away on February 29, 2024, in Houghton, MI, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 27, 1940, in Detroit, MI.
Left to cherish her memory are her three children: Kyle Carlson of Houghton, Corey (Michelle) Carlson of Wake Forest, NC, and Kristin (Mike Guzzo) Carlson of Albany, NY. Marilyn is also survived by her brother Ron (Linda) Bayma of The Villages, FL; sister Susan Hinton of Ann Arbor, MI; sister-in-law Sharon Mackrain of Houghton; grandchildren Camren and Talia Carlson of Kaiserslautern, Germany; Daniel, Evan, Gracie, and Henry of Wake Forest, NC; Adam and Allison Guzzo of Albany, NY; as well as nieces and nephews Mary Mackrain, Carol Yoshizumi, Tim Mackrain, Jerry Arnson, Mary Parsons, Kathy Wiitala, and Bonnie Roth.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 42 years, Raymond (Spence) Carlson; her parents, Dorothy and Aloysius Bayma; her mother-in-law, Fay Carlson; her father-in-law, Raymond Carlson; her sister-in-law, Arlene Arnson; and her brother-in-law, Bil Hinton.
Marilyn was a proud member of the inaugural class of the Suomi College nursing program, graduating in 1985. She dedicated nearly two decades of her life as a Registered Nurse, serving the community at Portage View Hospital, later UP Health System — Portage, until her retirement from the Ambulatory Care Unit in 2003. The family is deeply grateful for the exceptional care she received at UP Health System, including from former colleagues.
As a longtime resident of Tapiola, Marilyn found solace and joy in the beauty of nature. She cherished the sunsets, the sound of geese, and the chorus of spring peepers on her rural property. Despite the challenges of heavy snow, Marilyn surprised many by her enjoyment of plowing with her Kubota and single-handedly maintaining a 40-acre property throughout her seventies.
Marilyn was a strong believer in the Catholic faith and regularly attended Mass at the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock. A private Mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock, MI later this summer. Arrangements are being handled by Memorial Chapel (Chassell, MI). You are invited to share memories with the family on their online guestbook. (www.memorialchapel.net)
Marilyn will be remembered for her strength, compassion, and dedication to her family and community. May she rest in peace, knowing she was deeply loved. She will be forever missed.
