Margaret L. Salmi, 98, a former resident of Hancock passed away Wednesday March 2, 2022, at the Franklin House of Portage Pointe where she had been a resident patient.
She was born on November 24, 1923, in Houghton, MI to Hilda and Andrew (Anttila) Eskelinen. She was the youngest of four children.
Margaret is survived be her daughter Kathryn Salmi of Hancock and her sons Robert (Linda) Salmi of Algoma, WI and Alan Salmi of Evanston, IL: two granddaughters, Kristina Salmi-Klotz (Jason) of Fishcreek, WI and Kerry Salmi of Bryan, TX; Her three great grandchildren, Beatrix and Thomas of Fishcreek, WI and Neveah of Bryan, TX, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband Wilbert (Wimpy) Salmi on 1996 and sisters Irene Marsic and Martha Paull and her brother Andrew Eskelinen.
In her younger years, Margaret worked for the American Red Cross during World War II as well as the Army Corps of Engineers. Later she worked for Florida and Michigan Bell as a telephone operator.
After her marriage she devoted herself to her domestic duties, becoming an excellent seamstress and housewife raising three children and entertaining friends and relatives in her home. Margaret was an avid reader, enjoyed people and had a good sense of humor. She was able to travel to Louisiana, Finland and back to Florida with her husband and took part with pride in activities centered around her Finnish-American heritage.
She will be sadly missed be her family members as well as the many friends she made at Portage Pointe in her final years.
A Memorial Service will take place at a later date in the summer. The family would like to express their gratitude to the many excellent loving caregivers of Portage Pointe, Portage Home Hospice and Keweenaw Home Nursing & Hospice the took care of Margaret.
