Obituary: Margaret I. Lawhorn

Houghton, MI: Margaret I. Lawhorn, 96, passed away on March 4, 2018 at her daughter’s home in Houghton, Michigan.

Margaret was born to George and Bertha (Tiffey) Coleman on August 6, 1921 in Missouri Valley, Iowa.

Margaret married Virgil Lawhorn on January 1, 1945 before Virgil went to fight in the Army during WWII. Margaret went to San Luis Abispo, CA and worked in a bomber plant while Virgil was overseas. They later moved to DeKalb, Illinois where they built a home and raised their family. Margaret lived there until 2008 when she moved to The Bluffs in Houghton, MI to be closer to her daughter, Joyce Cornilsen. In 2016, Margaret moved in with her daughter and son in law, Bahne.

Margaret had a strong faith in God and was happiest studying her Bible and serving others.  She was also a strong prayer warrior.  Margaret was a member of the DeKalb Wesleyan Church.  One of her ministries was to young mothers, taking care of their babies so they could attend the worship service. If she ever felt someone needed help, she was there to help them not caring of the sacrifice it might be on her part.  She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting and made many afghans and baby blankets.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and six of her brothers and sisters: Albert, Thomas, Raymond, Lee, Gladys, Evelyn, as well as her granddaughter Meghan (McDonald) Jackson.

Survivors include her brother Roy (Marjorie) Coleman of Cherry Valley, IL, her son Ronald Lawhorn of DeKalb, and daughter Joyce (Bahne) Cornilsen of Houghton, MI. She also leaves a grandson Joshua (Dana) McDonald of University Place, Washington, her great grandchildren Jacob, Zoë and Evan as well as many much loved nieces, nephews and good friends.

Visitation will be from noon until 1 P.M. on Friday with the funeral service following at 1:00 P.M. at the Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in DeKalb. The O’Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock has been in charge of the local arrangements. To leave online condolences, please go to www.oneilldennisfh.com.
