Obituary: Margaret G. Allen

Margaret G. Allen ,87, a resident of Calumet passed away peacefully on Sunday October 13, 2019 after a five day stay at the Omega House in Houghton, MI.

She was born on August 22, 1932 in Copper City to her parents William and Lempi (Maki) Heikkinen.

She attended local schools and graduated from Calumet High School with the class of 1951.

Following high school Margaret moved to Detroit where she was employed at Burroughs. When she moved back to Calumet she was employed as a Michigan Bell telephone operator. After marrying she worked for JCPenney’s in Houghton and then later at Anderson & Jarvi Lumber Co. in Chassell doing bookkeeping. Margaret’s hobbies included taking photographs, playing the guitar and piano, and oil painting at the studio of Lawrence and Evelyn Carter.

Margaret was a lifelong member of the Lake Linden Ave. Gospel Hall where she married Kenneth E. Sohlden on Oct. 28, 1960 and they remained together until his death in July of 2001. In Dec. 2004 she married Marvin R. Allen at the First Baptist Church of Calumet where he was a member and they were together until his passing in May of 2019.

She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings the four Heikkinen brothers- Clarence/Louie, Ron, Harold and Wesley (Alice) and two sisters Irene (Al) Fosness and Elsie (Ernie) Mukka, her first husband Ken Sohlden and her first child James Sohlden both of Snake River Hill in Chassell, and her second husband Marvin R Allen.

She is survived by: Her daughter Mary (Sohlden) Pearson of Laurium and her Grandsons Charles (Amanda) Pearson of Cocoa Beach, FL and Bryan Pearson of Augusta, GA and one Great Grandson 2 yo Charlie Pearson of Cocoa Beach, FL.

Her son Michael Sohlden and her three other grandchildren: Grandsons Jared Sohlden of AZ, Christopher Sohlden of AZ and Granddaughter Lantana (Carlos) Nemorin of Florida.

Two sister in laws on Ken’s side: Rita Tervo of Sterling Heights, MI and Patricia Sohlden of New Berlin, WI and on Marvin’s side one brother in law Gary (Sharon) Allen of the Villages, FL and two sister in laws Maxine Barber and Marcy Church who both live downstate. Margaret has numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, Oct.17 at the Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet with Charles Savolainen to officiate. Friends and family may call at the Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home on Thursday from 12:00- 1:00.

Burial will take place in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.
