Lundy J. Castro, age 75, of Hancock, Michigan, passed away peacefully in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Friday, May 19, 2023, after battling a reoccurrence of cancer.
Lundy was born in Beatrice, Nebraska on August 25, 1947, son of Leon and Nina Castro. He graduated from Mt. Clemens High School in Michigan in 1965, and from Michigan Technological University in 1970. He and Nancy married in 1968 and lived in Hancock and later moved to the Detroit area before returning to Hancock where they lived for 30 years before making their home on North Grosse Pointe Shores.
Lundy excelled at computer programming and worked at D&N, UPPCO, Finlandia, and did independent consulting. He was a Master Scuba with P.A.D.I. for over 25 years and certified over one thousand divers while instructing at Michigan Tech. He loved diving in Lake Superior, Florida, Cozumel, and Hawaii. He proudly served as a police officer for 30 years working with the Houghton County Sheriff and the Hancock City Police Departments. He enjoyed playing hockey with local police officers and participating in the “Pigs and Heat” annual tournament. He was involved with Kiwanis Club with one of his favorite events being the annual pancake breakfast where he introduced the famous “Penny’s Pancakes.” He was an avid hockey fan of Michigan Tech and the Red Wings.
Lundy is survived by his beloved daughters, Jennifer Carlson (Rev. Steven), and Amber Karttunen (Dennis); and by his grandchildren Benjamin, Sadie, Sam, Harbor and Jordy; brother Daniel Castro (Karen), and sister Patricia Deisler (Richard), sister-in-law Pamela Castro; nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Nancy Castro, his parents, and his brothers Terry Castro and Steve Castro.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 1:00 – 4:00pm at the O’Neil-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock, Michigan. The Memorial Service will immediately follow the visitation on Sunday at 4:00pm.
Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Hancock, Michigan on Monday at 10:30am.
