Obituary: Lorraine Mary Marley

Lorraine Mary (Anderson) Marley, 87, a long-time resident of Ontonagon, MI, passed away at the Pewabic House of Portage Pointe in Hancock, MI on Friday, January 6, 2023, with her family at her side.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Priscilla Mary (Juchemich) Anderson, her father Clifford Hubert Anderson, her brother Raymond Charles Anderson and her grandson Seth Julien Manderfield.

Lorraine was born in Ishpeming, MI, on June 17, 1935.  She graduated in 1953 from the Ishpeming High School where she was awarded a state board of education scholarship to Northern Michigan University.  She attended Northern Michigan University and graduated from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, WI, with a degree in Education.  Ten years later, while raising her family and teaching full-time, she obtained a Master’s degree in Education and Learning Disabilities from Northern Michigan University.

Mrs. Marley started her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Dafter, MI.  She moved to Ontonagon- where she taught Second grade and Title 1 Remedial Reading for the Ontonagon School District.  Lorraine had a teaching career of 34 years.  Her dedication to teaching was shown by her expressions of love toward her students and the individualized instruction for each student.  She was known to be a favorite teacher of many of her former students.

Lorraine was a woman with many interests and talents.  First and foremost was her love for her family and grandchildren.  She had many close friendships, special affection for her collies, the love of teaching, playing the piano, reading, sewing, quilting, knitting, tatting, needlework, weaving, geology, and lapidary.

Lorraine enjoyed being active and involved.  She belonged to many committees including the Holy Family Catholic Church, Ontonagon Township Library Board, North Country Quilters, Buellwood Weavers and Fiber Guild, Ontonagon Diabetes Support Group, Retired Teacher’s MAPSPS Organization, and the local Red Hats.

Lorraine was a true friend to many and was always there for anyone in need.  She was generous with her time, shared her talents, and expressed her love in many ways.

Lorraine is survived by her son Mark Marley of Big Rapids, MI, her daughters; Madeline (Bill) Manderfield of Atlantic Mine, MI, and Priscilla (David) Chynoweth of Hancock, MI, her grandchildren: Jamie (Patrick) Leonard, Mark Marley, Michele (James) Strickland, Angela Maderfield, Katherine (Esaias) Dorvinen, Genevieve Manderfield, William (Rebekah) Manderfield, Josiah Manderfield, Marley (Fred) Chynoweth and Benjamin Chynoweth, her great-grandchildren: Gavin, and Caden, Jai’Lynn, Kwinten, Ari Elle, Aurora and Forrest.

The family would like to thank all of the dedicated staff at Portage Pointe for the amazing love and care extended to Lorraine and Lorraine’s family during her time there.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Lorraine will be held 1:00 pm Friday, January 13, 2023, at Holy Family Catholic Church of Ontonagon with Fr. Michael Jacobus to officiate.  Spring burial will be in the Holy Family Cemetery of Ontonagon.

Friends may call on Friday, January 13, 2023, from 11:00 am until time of services at Holy Family Catholic Church of Ontonagon.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests the memorial contributions be given to an Ontonagon Charity in memory of Lorraine Marley.
