Obituary: Lorraine Hirvela

Lorraine Jean (Maki) Hirvela of Laurium, Michigan passed away on January 5th 2024 with her family by her side. She was born on February 16th, 1937 in Laurium to Richard and Esther (Kuusula) Maki. She graduated from Calumet High School with the class of 1955. She married Melvin Hirvela on March 16th, 1957.

Lorraine worked as a cook at the Apostolic Lutheran Home for the Aged in Calumet until her retirement. She enjoyed cooking, baking, crossword puzzles, and watching the Green Bay Packers. She loved spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of the National Evangelical Lutheran Church in Calumet until its closing, and is a current member of Peace Lutheran Church in Houghton.

Lorraine is preceded in death by her parents Richard and Esther Maki, husband Melvin, daughter Cheryl Spry, siblings Robert (Jim) Maki, Edwin Maki, Donna Barry, and Deborah Peters, sons in law Greg Spry and Terry Mytty, granddaughter Mandy Kela, brothers in law Gary Lompre and Ed Sintkowski, and nephews Doug Sintkowski and Jarod Lompre.

Lorraine is survived by children Diane (Bruce) Bykkonen of Calumet, Paula (Tim) Huls of Calumet, Susan (Mark) Kela of Boston Location, and Brian (Jon) Hirvela of Laurium, grandchildren Joel, Jordan, Jillian, Justin, Jessica, Dylan, Cassandra, Christina, Paula, Ashley, Tracy, and Rachel, siblings Karen Sintkowski, Marvin Maki, and Marilyn Lompre. She is also survived by 14 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, January 13th 2024 at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet with Pastor Thomas Welch to officiate. Visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00am Saturday morning at the funeral home. Erickson Crowley Peterson is assisting the family with the arrangements.
