Obituary: Lisa A. Haataja

As received from Memorial Chapel Funeral and Cremation Service:

Lisa Ann Haataja, 59, of Baraga, MI passed away peacefully; surrounded by loved ones, on Thursday, November 9th, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI, weeks after receiving a diagnosis of MDS, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow.

Lisa was born on September 22, 1964, in Hancock, MI, to Norman Haataja Sr. and Doris Dakota (Heikkinen). Lisa lost her hearing after an illness in early infancy. She was proud of the community of deaf individuals she identified with. She graduated with honors from Houghton High School, attended Gallaudet University in Washington D.C., and graduated from Michigan Career and Technical Institute.

Lisa enjoyed sewing and crafts. She always looked forward to outings with family and friends, especially holidays and special family events. She had a fondness for moose, so if you plan to attend the service and have any moose apparel, it will give Lisa a laugh from her throne in Heaven.

Lisa is survived by her beloved daughter, Laura Lee Tahtinen, and by her siblings, Pamela Haataja, Mary McRae, Nora Korkko, and Norman Haataja; and a large, loving extended family.

Lisa was preceded in death by her father, Norman, and her mother, Doris.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, November 17th at Memorial Chapel Funeral Home – Mt. View Chapel, 14 7th St., South Range, MI. Visitation begins at 10:00 AM and Funeral services begin at 11:00 AM. At 12:00 PM, there will be a burial ceremony at Mountain View Cemetery in South Range. Afterwards, a luncheon will be served from 12:30 to 4:00 PM at Doelle Senior Citizens Center, 17040 Valley Road, Tapiola, MI. A luncheon contribution is appreciated but not obligatory.
