Obituary: Lawrence E. “Larry” Mantta

Lawrence E. “Larry” Mantta EMSC, Ret. age 78 of Keweenaw Bay, MI passed away Sunday, April 25, 2021 at UP Health System, Marquette. He was born in Highland Park, MI on December 23, 1942 the son of the late Arne and Agnes (Maki) Mantta. Larry graduated from Baraga High School in 1960. He enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country for 20 years, 17 of those years as a Sub Vet. Upon his retired, he was employed as a Civil Service Engineer on base for the Navy. Larry married the former Karen Secrest in Norfolk, Virginia on September 8, 1998. He was a member of Mission United Lutheran Church, Pelkie, the Baraga American Legion Post #444 and the Superior A’s. Larry showed Model A’s in local 4th of July parades and the Strawberry Festival in Chassell, and loved tinkering on anything with a motor.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Karen Mantta of Keweenaw Bay, son Arne Mantta of Virginia Beach, Virginia and daughter Brenda Conway of Chesapeake, Virginia, 3 granddaughters and 2 great grandchildren, brother Lane (Mickie) Mantta of Alston and numerous nieces, cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents his brother Donald “Doc” Mantta and 2 step children.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 30, 2021 in the Pelkie Cemetery with Pastor Kelly Ylitalo officiating followed by Baraga county area veterans under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post #444 conducting military honors.
