Obituary: Laurine J. Gale

Hancock: Laurine J. Gale, 92, a resident of the Houghton Canal Road in Oskar, passed away on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 at Canal View – Houghton County.

She was born on October 7, 1929 in Mason City, Iowa to Ray and Regina Gliver. They moved to Villa Park, Illinois where Laurie graduated from York High School in 1948. At age 19 she moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin where she met and married her husband of 62 years, Calvin Gale. They resided in Milton Junction and Madison, Wisconsin for 18 years while they raised 4 children. She was active in church bazaars and Sunday School, Cub Scout den mother, girl scout cookie mom, and a founding member of the Madison Twins Club, where they met special, life long friends. In 1969 they moved to Houghton when Cal took a position at MTU and Laurie resumed her career as an executive secretary, working 20+ years at Woodlock Company for Jim Ruppe.

Laurie was active in the Michigan Tech University Women’s Club, Alpha Gamma Delta Alumnae Chapter, the Calumet Theatre, where she enjoyed giving tours, and at Portage Hospital where she was a long time volunteer at the front desk with her good friend Dennis. Other interests included plays and musicals, collecting advertising spoons, doing crossword puzzles, and spending Christmas Days at McLean State Park cross country skiing and roasting hot dogs with her family, including Copper, the family Golden Retriever. She and Cal enjoyed their many travels around the world and spending winters in Mesa, Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her husband Cal in 2013,a brother and sister in law, Stuart and Marilyn of Wauwatosa, WI, and a sister in law, Beth of Madison.

Survivors include her sons Bill (Sara) of Hancock, and John of South Range, daughters Janet of Sturgeon Bay WI, and Susan McCall Ward of Green Bay, WI, grandchildren Brandon (Casey) McCall and Meghan McCall (Graham), all of Green Bay. She also leaves behind a close brother and sister in law, Phil and Judy Winkel of Madison, WI and numerous nieces and nephews.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no services. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, Laurie requested that memorials be made to the Copper Country Humane Society or the Calumet Theatre.
