Laila E. Niemi, 90, a former resident of Calumet, passed away on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at the Lighthouse of Hubbell.
She was born on February 24, 1928, in Oneco to Thomas and Hilda (Koski) Kaipio.
She attended the local schools.
Following high school, Laila worked at Whispering Pines Motel, Martins Cabins and at Superior Manufacturing as a tool grinder for many years.
She loved animals, dancing and cooking. She was a great cook, specializing in Finnish dishes.
In 1958 she was united in marriage to Carl Niemi, he preceded her in death in 1983.
She is preceded in death by her parents, 7 brothers Werner, Alfred, William, Donald, Reuben, Thomas, and Martin Kaipio, and 2 sisters, Helen Somero, and Edith Gregorich.
She is survived by:
Her sister: Shirley Wilson of Madison Heights, Michigan
Her special niece and caregiver: Bonnie Somero
And numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The funeral service will be held at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 11:00 am with Pastor Tim Johnston to officiate.
Friends may call at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home on Saturday, August 11, 2018 from 10:00 am until the time of the service.
Burial will take place in the Lake View Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Aspirus Keweenaw Hospice and the Lighthouse at Hubbell for the care they gave Laila.
