Katherine Jane Kunick, age 77 of Baraga, Michigan passed away on Saturday, November 18th, 2023 at U P Health System, Marquette, Michigan.
She was born on a farm in Portland, Indiana, daughter of Dr. John A Stroube and Betty (Beeler) Stroube on January 8, 1946. They moved to L’Anse, Michigan in 1953.
Kathe attended L’Anse schools from 1st grade on. She was the president of the class of 1964 all four years of high school, she was a true leader. Kathe attended Michigan State University from 1964-1966, then moved to Milwaukee and worked for Blue Cross in the Special Claims department. On June 3, 1967 she married Ernest Kunick; they were married for 50 years at the time of his death in 2018.
They lived in L’Anse and she worked at BCMH in the Radiology department. She and Ernie moved and lived in Marenisco, Michigan from 1970-1978. In 1973 they welcomed the birth of their son Jason Kile. The Kunick family moved back to Baraga in 1978 and lived on M-38. Kathe and Ernie both shared a time working as EMT’s for Bay Ambulance. In 1979 they bought their present home in Baraga. Kathe worked at then Celotex in Accounting, and as Administrative Assistant for 26 years until her retirement.
Kathe was a faithful member of the L’Anse Methodist Church from moving to L’anse in 1953 until present. She acted as Finance Chairperson for many years, sang in the choir and was a member of the woman’s group.
Kathe was a member of Bells on the Bay, loved being on the bowling team for many years where her average bowling score was 150. She enjoyed reading and card making. Kathe’s home was the heart of family dinners for holidays and birthdays.
She is survived by her loving son Jason Kile Kunick of Baraga, MI; their beautiful cat Peta; sisters, Rebecca Stroube of L’Anse, MI, Sara Stroube of Burleson, TX, Ginger Stroube (Bob Perreault) of Hancock, MI; sister-in-laws Ann Swartz of Baraga, Frances Chartier of Fremont, MI; special cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Kathe is preceded in death by her parents, and husband Ernie.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy the family suggest memorials in Kathe’s memory be directed to the L’Anse Methodist Church.
Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 29th at 1:00 p.m. at the L’Anse Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Rhoades and Rev. John Henry officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Dessert and coffee will follow in the church hall. Burial will be in the spring in the Baraga Cemetery. Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
