Karl Robert Kahkonen, age 73 of L’Anse, MI passed away on Saturday, October 2nd, 2021 at his home.
He was born November 26, 1947 in L’Anse, MI son o f Waino and Marie (Brunet) Kahkonen. Karl graduated from L’Anse High School in 1966. He then went into the U.S. Army, serving from 1966-68 during Vietnam. After returning from his time in service he worked for Pettibone then Kahkonen Excavating for several years and was known by “Sandman”. Karl then worked construction in Florida for 10 years coming back and started Karl’s Karpentry, where he and his son Tim ran the company for 15 years until he retired in 2009.
Karl always had a “project”, after retirement he restored his 1946 Jeep Willies. He enjoyed riding in the woods with his “pooch”, making daily stops at his favorite place the Finns, and his children’s houses.
Surviving are his children, LeAnn LeClaire of L’Anse, Tim (Marisa) Kahkonen of L’Anse, Renee (Erich) Partsch of Silverdale, WA; grandchildren, Bryant Froberg, Bailey Froberg, Autumn (Andre) Kahkonen, Avery Kahkonen, Bo (Janet) Partsch, Carli Partsch, Chloe Partsch; 4 great grandchildren; brother Larry Kahkonen of Chassell; sisters, Kathy (Pat) Daust of Marquette, Barbara Boyer of Manistique; several special nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his parents and a sister Dorothy Coyne; brother-in-law Tony Boyer; son-in-law PJ LeClaire.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 23rd at the Finn’s bar from 1-4:00 p.m. The Baraga County Area Veterans will conduct military rites at 3:00 p.m. Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
