June I. Manninen, 90, a resident of Isle Royale Location-Houghton, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Canal View – Houghton County where she had been a patient for the past two weeks.
She was born on June 23, 1932, in Houghton, a daughter of the late Charles and Susanna (Hakala) Tauriainen. June was raised in Houghton and attended school until she had to stay home to help care for her mother. June and her children were proud that she had gone back to school to receive her GED as an adult.
On June 23, 1950, she was united in marriage to Earl Manninen. The couple made their home in Isle Royale Location where they raised their family. On November 22, 2001, Earl preceded June in death.
Mrs. Manninen had worked over the years for Central Food, Vertin’s Department store, the Book Store in Houghton and Spurgeon’s Department Store. She also enjoyed helping work the voting polls for many years. As her children were growing she also helped with their Sunday school and chaperoned the Houghton School Ice Rink. June enjoyed reading, feeding the birds and chipmunks, working in her gardens, had enjoyed making rag rugs, knitting, crocheting, baking and cooking. She always was able and willing to have a cup of coffee and a little bakery when company would stop by.
Preceding her in death were her husband Earl, her infant son Alan, her son Chuck along with 11 siblings.

Dean (Karen) Manninen of Tapiola
Marian (Bob) Peltier of Dollar Bay
9 grandchildren 15 great-grandchildren
Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service for June will be held later this year in the Forest Hill
Cemetery of Houghton.
