John Roger Voakes, Jr. age 70 of L’Anse, MI passed away on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at UP Health System Marquette, MI.
He was born November 12, 1947 in L’Anse, MI son of John and Pherol (LaBar) Voakes Sr. John graduated from L’Anse High School in 1966. He was in the US Army from 1968-70 during Vietnam. John married the former Karen Paquet on August 26, 1972 in L’Anse. He worked for Celotex Corp for over 40 years, retiring in 2012.
John enjoyed reading, bird watching, walking on the Bayshore, listening to the waterfront concerts, and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.
Surviving are his daughter Saundra (Vincent) Mistysyn of Apex, NC; sons, Roger (Beth) Voakes of Oakridge, NC, Michael (Alison) Voakes of New Baltimore, MI, Robert Voakes of Clinton Twp, MI; brother Keith (Diana) Voakes of AZ; grandchildren, Piper, Rory Grace, Avalon, Megan, Annalyse, Meredith, Vincent; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Preceding him in death are his parents; wife Karen Voakes; brother Alfred Rasanen; sister Clara Grubb.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 29th at 11:00 a.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home with Rev. Margaret Grant officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. A luncheon and fellowship will follow in The Sharing Room at the funeral home. Burial will be in the spring in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery.
