Obituary: John Ketola

John R. (Jack) Ketola passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at the Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital.

Jack was born on April 29,1931 in Mohawk to Ronald and Ethel (Tolonen) Ketola.

Jack graduated from Calumet High School in 1949. He served 2 years in the United States Army during the Korean War. After his service he attended Michigan State University.

In 1957, he married the love of his life, Erma Koski. They made their home in Detroit, where he worked for the City of Detroit DPW as a surveyor till his retirement in 1985. Jack did not fully retire, he took the office of Allouez Twp Supervisor.

Many will remember the many trips to and from Detroit for 12 years after he and Erma decided to raise their children in Mohawk.

Jack was an avid hockey fan of the Copper Kings and Wolverines. Attending his last game last Friday before his hospital admittance.

Jack had a love of golf, that he and Erma passed down to their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Golfing for years at the KML then at Sandy Pebbles, where he is as the official first member. Jack was an icon of the Keweenaw.

Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Erma in 2017, his parents, sisters-in-law Roma Aalto& Enith (Walt) Juopperi.

Jack is survived by his sons, Ron and Paul, daughter, Becky, grandchildren Cassandra Ketola, Jody Ketola, Emily (Grant) Allen, John Butala, Jacob Butala and Jana Butala. Great grandchildren, Jordan Redd, Joey Redd, Nathan Thyrion, and Marlee Allen. His brother-in-law, Carl (Dorothy) Koski, many cousins and friends.

A private family service will be held.

A graveside service with military honors by the Copper Country Veterans Association will be held on June 11, 2022 at 10:30 AM in Lake View Cemetery section 5.

A luncheon will follow at Sandy Pebbles Golf Course at 12:30 PM.
