Obituary: Jeffrey T. Talcott

As received from the Memorial Chapel & Plowe Funeral Homes:

Jeffrey T. Talcott, 63, of Sun City Center, FL and Hancock, MI passed away Saturday, June 5, 2021, at his home in Hancock.

Jeff was born on March 1, 1958, in Redford, MI the eldest son of Charles and Catherine (Spala) Talcott.  After earning his degree in Geology from the University of Tulsa he worked in the Detroit area as a land surveyor.  Jeff moved to Hancock in 1994 to complete engineering requirements at Michigan Technological University and earned his Professional Land Surveying license in 1997.  There he met his wife, Denise (Wieber).  They were married in July 1998 and shared almost 23 years of love, laughter and adventure.

Jeff loved everything outdoors, especially fishing, boating, and skiing, and never tired of studying and discussing these topics with fellow enthusiasts.  He was the ‘go-to’ guy for many family members and friends and had a knack for all things mechanical and electrical.  He never met a motor or gadget he couldn’t improve or a problem he couldn’t solve.  Other interests included gold mining, flying, and following the space program.  Jeff had an artistic side as well, with pen and ink, and wood craft.

Jeff was introduced to powerboat racing in the Detroit area in his youth, and when the opportunity arose in 2005 to get back into racing he was all in.  Jeff enjoyed racing his SST-60 tunnel boat but his biggest racing claim to fame was as a master crew chief for his wife, tweaking and tuning boats, motors and props to squeeze out every bit of performance.

Jeff was devoted to family, and he loved involving his nieces, nephews and friends in his love of fishing and boating.  They have many happy memories of Jeff taking them for water skiing runs on Portage Lake or fishing on Lake Superior.  More recently he enjoyed exploring the waters of Tampa Bay and the Gulf, taking family and friends on boat rides and fishing trips there.

Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Charles.  Surviving are his wife Denise, his mother Catherine (Kitty) Talcott of Sun City Center, FL, his sister Rebecca (Stu) Cooper of Annapolis, MD, and his brother Bill (Sue) Talcott of North Port, FL.

Also surviving are his father and mother- in-law Robert and Janet Wieber of Houghton, MI, brothers and sisters in-law Bob Wieber, Jill (Jim) Johnson, Ken Wieber, Tim (Anne) Wieber, Janine (Hal) Burton and Michele Wieber as well as his Aunt Jackie and Uncle Ed Spala, special cousin Jim Spala and friend Dan Mendenhall, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A prayer service for Jeff will be held at 4:00 pm Monday, June 14, 2021, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral home of Hancock with Fr. John Martignon to officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, June 15 at the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton.

Friends may call on Monday, June 14, from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock.

Memorial contributions may be made to Little Brothers, Friends of the Elderly or the Sun City Center Florida Emergency Squad.
