Obituary: Janice M. Mikkola

Janice M. Mikkola, 84, a resident of Houghton, passed away Monday, June 20, 2022, at the Franklin House of Portage Pointe in Hancock where she had been a resident patient.

Janice was born on November 4, 1937, in Duluth, Minnesota, the daughter of the late Wallace and Violet (Hedin) Boyd. She was raised in Duluth and was a graduate of Denfeld High School. Janice furthered her education and went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in Education at University of Minnesota – Duluth.

Janice was a teacher at South Range Elementary School for over 20 years. She was united in marriage to Charles E. Mikkola in 1973. He preceded her in death on February 28, 2012. Janice was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in South Range where she was active with the Quilting Club. She enjoyed reading and game nights with friends. She was a great friend to everyone and would always keep in touch with those who lived away from the area.

Besides her parents and husband, Janice was preceded in death by a son David Torgersen and a brother Robert Boyd.

Surviving are sons: Paul (Beth) Torgersen of Copper City, MI

John (Debbie) Torgersen of Jackson, MI

Her grandchildren: Lindsay and Emily

Great-grandchildren: Hailey, Cameron, Skylar, Jordan

A sister-in-law: Charlotte Boyd

Numerous other family members and friends.

A memorial service for Janice will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at Grace Lutheran Church in South Range with Rev. Micah Cavaleri to officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. View Cemetery in South Range.

Visitation will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. preceding the service.
