Obituary: James R. “Jim” Shannon

James R. “Jim” Shannon, age 71 of Baraga, MI passed away at his home on Thursday, October 27, 2022. He was born in Hancock, MI on May 29, 1951 the son of the late James R. and Helen (Madosh) Shannon. Jim graduated from Baraga High School in 1970. He joined the United States Coast Guard and served his country during the Vietnam Era. Jim married the former Nancy Thoresen on November 11, 2006 in L’Anse at her mom’s family farm. Jim had been employed at CertainTeed (Celotex), L’Anse as a laborer for 30 years. He retired in 2005. Jim was a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, and the Baraga American Legion Post #444. Jim had bowled for many years at the Ojibwa Casino and the Whirl-I-Gig. He enjoyed bear and deer hunting, being in the outdoors, woods rides, visiting and was an avid Detroit Lions fan.

Jim is survived by his loving wife Nancy of Baraga, daughter Diana (Jason) Chaudier of Baraga, step daughters Jennifer St. George of L’Anse, Kerry (John) Varline of Baraga and Michelle (Eric) Ketola of L’Anse, 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 2 on the way. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Michael.

A celebration of life visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse. Immediately following the celebration of life, military honors, under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post #444 will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. A luncheon will be held at the Baraga American Legon Post #444 at 1 p.m.

Interment will take place in the Assinins Cemetery, Assinins, MI.
