Irene Ruohonen, 89, passed away on Saturday, October 19, at Canal View–Houghton County.
She was born in Atlantic Mine on April 29, 1930, a daughter of the late Werner and Mamie (Holappa) Lampinen, and was a graduate of Jeffers High School. Irene was employed as a secretary for Herman Gundlach, Inc.
On August 20, 1955, Irene married Fredrick Ruohonen. They were married for 53 years until his death on October 24, 2008. They resided in Houghton until 1976 at which time they moved too Oskar.
Irene was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic Mine. She was a Sunday School teacher, church treasurer, and involved in the Women’s Bethany Circle. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and watching them play sports.
Surviving are her daughter Mary (Robert) Erva, son Michael Ruohonen, four grandchildren, Daniel Erva, Amy (Matthew) Sundberg, Andrew Ruohonen and Larura Ruohonen, one sister, Martha Jukkala, one sister-in-law Aili (William) Dunstan, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday, October 23, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic Mine with Rev. Bucky Beach to officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.
