Obituary: Howard Weldon Maki

Howard Weldon Maki, age 80 of Alston, MI, was found dead on Sunday, June 20, 2021 in Laird Twp. after being reported missing for several days as a result of dementia.

He was born August 12, 1940 in Alston, MI, son of Aake and Impie (Pirhonen) Maki. Howard graduated from Baraga High School in 1958 and then attended NMU. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard during the Detroit riots. In 1964 he purchased Yawkey’s Service in Alston and owned and operated it for 57 years.

He was a founding member of the Laird Twp Volunteer Fire Department. Howard enjoyed skiing, hunting, antique tractor racing, and treasure hunting for copper.

Surviving are his children, Nyla Middleton (Brad) Nightingale of Plymouth, MN, Wayne Maki of Keystone Heights, Florida, Bryan (Jodie) Maki of Maplewood, MN; sister Karen Larsen of Shoreview, MN; grandchildren Peter (Regina) Middleton, Henry Middleton, Joshua Middleton, Abigail Middleton, Caleb Maki, Silas Maki; great grandchildren, Esther and Sylvie Middleton.

A memorial gathering for Howard W. Maki will be held at the Laird Twp Volunteer Fire Dept on Friday, July 2, 2021. A time to visit and food will be from 4-6pm with the memorial program starting at 6pm.

Howard was a member of the Laird Fire Dept and was honored to serve Laird Twp since 1968.

The family requests salads or side dishes be brought to share. Please also bring a lawn chair.

Please park on Hoover Road and the back of the ballfield, if you are able, to reserve closer parking for those with mobility issues.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations for the Laird Twp Volunteer Fire Dept. Cards may be sent to 11985 Hwy M-38, Pelkie MI 49958.
