As received from the Pearce Funeral Home:
Herbert Marutz, aged 85, peacefully passed away on December 9th, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Throughout his life, he exemplified the qualities of generosity and optimism, which were a testament to his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ.
Born on September 6th, 1937, in St. Joseph, MI, he was raised by his mother, Eleanor, and stepfather, Ludwig Beljan, in Hancock, MI. In 1957, he married JoAnn Sullivan while serving in the U.S. Navy. They settled in Phoenix, AZ, where they were blessed with four children. In 1975, Herbert and his family relocated to Calumet, Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula, where they enjoyed a fulfilling family life for the next ten years. Herb worked as a machinist for Williams, followed by employment at the Quinnesec paper mill until his retirement in 2002, which allowed them to remain in the Upper Peninsula.
Herbert took great pride in his service to his country as a member of the United States Navy. His time in the Navy was a source of honor and patriotism for him, and he carried that sense of pride throughout his life. Herbert’s dedication to serving his fellow countrymen extended beyond his military service, as he continued to embody the values of loyalty, duty, and selflessness in his everyday life. His commitment to his country was an integral part of his identity, and he will be remembered as a proud veteran who served with honor and distinction.
In addition to his numerous contributions, it is important to note Herbert Marutz’s significant involvement in the Boy Scouts of America. He served as a dedicated Scoutmaster, guiding and mentoring young scouts throughout his years of service. His commitment to the values and teachings of the organization left a lasting impact on the lives of those he mentored. Herbert’s service as a Scoutmaster is yet another testament to his selflessness and dedication to shaping the character and future of the youth in his community.
Herbert is survived by his 4 children, ten grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. Herbert’s absence is deeply felt by his entire family, as well as close friends from various communities who were touched by his caring nature, generosity, and dry sense of humor. Those who attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and his many neighbors on Gratiot Lake will fondly remember his unwavering commitment, dedication, and enthusiasm.
A memorial service in his honor will be held on July 29th, 2023, at 11 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, located at 47691 Meadow Street, Houghton, Michigan. The arrangements are being handled by the Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden, and Herbert will be laid to rest at Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.
