Obituary: Greg J. Davis

Greg Davis, 60 A resident of Houghton, passed away Saturday April 17, 2021.

Born on January 12, 1961, Greg was a fixture in downtown Houghton. The son of the late Jon and Marcia Davis, Greg was a graduate of Houghton High School and Michigan State University. Greg returned from East Lansing and became a familiar face at the Library Bar and Restaurant, both as a server, and behind the bar. Greg’s tenure at the Library continued after Jon and Marcia sold the business, and after a brief stint at operating the Northern Lights restaurant at Franklin Inn, Greg continued with his friend Jim Cortright to carry on the Library Restaurant and Brewpub legacy with his Houghton family. 

He was a great fan of all things sports. Just like Jon, Greg had an affinity for the POR Road Rally, following racing and many other sports closely.  Greg met with friends regularly to watch and give his special critique on whatever sport happened to be taking place. He also loved to golf and was a regular at the Portage Lake Golf Course.  He participated in many of the various tournaments and was a 3-time champion of the famous and highly revered “Handsome Man Golf Tournament” Whereupon winning, his victory speech consisted simply of two words that he used famously……“Chop Chop.”

Known for his gruff and gravelly voice, and his fun-loving lifestyle, Greg had friends all through the UP and beyond. He could meet a group of friends for dinner, and by dessert he would have talked them all into driving down to Detroit for a Tiger’s game the next day. And when such long road trips were not possible, he would walk with his friends to all their favorite places in Houghton and Hancock.

Surviving are his sister, Lee Davis of Grand Rapids, and his brother, Eric Davis of Kalamazoo.

A graveside service will be held at 3 pm Thursday, July 22, 2021, in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Eagle Harbor, MI.
