Obituary: Glenn A. Hietala

Glenn Hietala, 66, a resident of Liminga, died on Saturday, March 25, 2023, after a lengthy illness, at Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin, in Milwaukee, with his sister Sherri and Tom by his side.

He was born December 5, 1956, to the late Edsel and Joyce (Taavola) Hietala. Glenn was a graduate of Jeffers High School, class of 1975. While in high school he played on the basketball team and spent more time on the court floor than on his feet. He was a hustler and had only one speed, faster! He was also a member of the Jets track team.

On July 13, 2013, Glenn was united in marriage to Christine Mineau in Gladstone.

Glenn had worked as a concrete finisher for S&S (Somero & Somero) Concrete, in New Ipswich, New Hampshire for over 20 years. He was a certified welder and worked at the Ontonagon Shipyard. Glenn also was a member of Local 8 Ironworkers Union, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  More recently Glenn was the manager of receiving at Tadych’s Econo Foods, in Houghton, until his illness wouldn’t allow him to work any longer.

Glenn had played in the local men’s baseball league. He was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and the Green Bay Packers. He also loved to watch NASCAR racing and spaghetti westerns, Food Network, classic shows on ME TV and sci-fi shows & movies. He anxiously waited for spring to arrive each year so that he could plant his vegetable garden, always determined to grow the biggest and best-tasting tomatoes. Glenn loved the outdoors. He was a gifted fisherman and deer hunter. Glenn also enjoyed helping his sister harvest a deer. He was a multiple Bocce Ball Champion with Pam Barton at the annual Donny Wourinen Bocce Ball Tournament. Glenn was affectionately nicknamed “Uncle Turtle” by Josh and Destri.

Glenn is survived by his wife, Christine; sister, Sherri (Tom) Nettell; nephew, Josh (Christian) Nettell; niece, Destri Nettell; nephew, Tyler (Dakota) Hietala; great-niece, Neea; mother-in-law, Mary Lou Mineau; brothers-in-law, Peter, Brian (Jackie), Keith (Ana), Mark and Kelly Mineau; sister-in-law, Rose Spencer; longest/oldest friend, Don Taaskila; aunts, uncles and numerous cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Garry; numerous aunts and uncles; cousins, Rick Taavola, Frank Morin, Jr. and Mark Morin.

Glenn will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

The family would like to thank Joan Suits, PA; dialysis department at Portage Health Systems and Dr. Woltman.

A memorial service for Glenn will be held at 11:00 am Saturday June 3, 2023 at the Range Apostolic Lutheran Church with Pastor Chuck Bylkas to officiate. Visitation will take place from 10 until 11. Burial will be in the Toivola Cemetery.
