Calumet – Garfield “Jake” Baranowski 77, passed away on Monday June 29, 2020 at Canal View Houghton County Medical Care Facility. He was born in Swedetown, a son of the late Leo and Gladys (Johnson) Baranowski. Jake attended the local schools. He worked at the Osceola Mine for a few years before joining the U.S. Army where he served in Germany, and was honorably discharged. He then went to work for Peninsular Gas and worked there for 30 years. Jake married Carole A. (Schoolcraft) on August 18, 1979, and they lived in the Baranowski family home in Swedetown. Carole preceded him in death on April 19, 2020. Jake loved all outdoor activities including fishing, camping and canoeing, but especially gardening. He was considered by many to be a master gardener. He and Carole preserved the bounties of their garden and shared the efforts of their hard work with many. He was also a wonderful cook. Jake was well versed and knowledgeable in many areas. He and Carole seldom missed an episode of Jeopardy.
He is survived by his brothers Philip (Jayne Harvey) and Bob (Sharon), and sister Loretta (Dolly) Rowe, step-daughter Jenny Rohlf (Mike Bollig) and her children Carole Ann and Jesse, their children Michael, Clayton, Arianna and Isak and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Carole, sisters June Lewandowski, Bernice Raedeke, Geraldine Jarve and brothers Jerome “Jerry” and Richard. Family services will be held at a later date.
