Obituary: G. Michael West

G. Michael West, 72, a resident of Calumet passed away on July 16, 2019 peacefully at his home with family by his side.

He was born on May 2, 1947 in Laurium to Gordon and Lorraine
(Kanniainen) West. He attended the local schools and graduated from Calumet High School with the Class of 1965. After graduation, Mike attended Northern Michigan University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in education.

He began his teaching career at Chassell Schools. He then took a position
teaching at Mohawk school, which annexed with the Public Schools of Calumet, Laurium, and Keweenaw. He retired in 1999 after 30 years of teaching.

Mike was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with
his best buddy, Marty. He was a master of the grill. He was known for his
excellent cooking skills at home, the hunting camp, and for his fellow members of the Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsman’s Club.

Mike’s first love was his family. They spent their summers in Bootjack where Mike entertained everyone with his singing and playing guitar. He also enjoyed going for rides. Big Traverse was his destination of choice.

After retiring from teaching, Mike returned to his love for carpentry. He was a true handyman and could fix anything! He was a patient, kind man who helped anyone when they needed it.

On June 3, 1972 he married Marlene Quello at St. Paul the Apostle
Church in Calumet.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and the Calumet-Keweenaw
Sportsman’s Club.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Lorraine West,
and baby sister.

He is survived by his loving wife: Marlene

Joni (Brad) Carlson of Calumet

His grandchildren: Jax and Khloe Carlson

His brothers: Larry West of Twin Lakes, WI

Jeff (Kim) West of Calumet

Sister-in-law: Linda Porter

Special family friends: Diane Baratono and Nancy Dull

Cousin: Glenn Hendrickson

And numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday July 23, 2019 in section 74 of The Lake View Cemetery in Calumet with Pastor Jared Howard to officiate.
