Obituary: Evelyn E. Maki

Keweenaw Bay          

     Evelyn Esther (Kalliainen) Maki, age 76, formerly of Keweenaw Bay, passed away at St. John Ascension Hospital in Detroit on December 6, 2019 after a lengthy struggle with Lewy Body/Alzheimers. She was born to Rudolph and Sylvia (Routsi) Kalliainen in Portage Entry.  She shared an idyllic childhood with her brothers, Walter and David.  

     Evelyn married John William Maki in 1959.  They made their home in Keweenaw Bay, where they raised seven children. She worked hard keeping house. 

    Evelyn loved working.  She had a sewing business, worked for Baraga Area Schools, Department of Human Services, Baraga County Juvenile Probation, and Keweenaw Bay Tribal Court. 

      Evelyn loved reading and shared her books generously.  Evelyn enjoyed travel, cross country skiing, running, strawberry picking, wildlife viewing, hunting for morels, baking, shopping, camping, the beach, board games, music, gardening, and especially being with children. She was welcoming to all and enjoyed time with her numerous friends. 

      She will be sadly missed by children and grandchildren Gayle (Gary) Marochek and Jeremy of Eastpointe, Kristine Moore of Eastpointe, Karen (Randy) Karttunen and Renae (Brian) Patrick and Andrew of Potterville, Todd (Karen) Maki and Emma and John of Ishpeming, Dan Maki and Danny, Michael Russo, Jenni Russo and Jacki Russo of Sault Ste. Marie and Jennie (Mark) Green and Evan, Zachary and Davis of Clinton Township. She is survived by brothers David Kalliainen of Chassell, Walter Kalliainen of Portage Entry, and sister-in-law Mary Smith of Hancock as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John, her son John, sister in-laws Betty Kalliainen and Kathy Kalliainen and son in-law Keith Moore.

     A service to honor Evelyn’s it tentatively planned for her birthday April 4th, 2020 in Chassell.
