Elsmarie C. Alger, age 88, of Dollar Bay, Michigan, passed away on December 12, 2023, at Garden View Assisted Living in Calumet, Michigan. Elsmarie was born to Peter and Maria (nee Klements) Ostlender on November 23, 1935, in Rahway, New Jersey. The family moved to Calumet when her father, an engineer, was hired to lead a team re-opening Copper Mines in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. She attended Calumet High School and graduated in 1954. She was united in marriage to George R. Alger of Midland, Michigan, in 1955. George and Elsmarie were married for 63 years at George’s passing in 2018.
Elsmarie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George, grandson Jordan Alger, and her son-in-law, Michael Sloat. Surviving are her sons Peter Alger (Nikki) of LaValle, WI., Russell Alger (Monica) of Dollar Bay, MI., and daughter Christine Sloat (Michael, dec.) of Reedsburg, WI. Elsmarie was a beloved Grandmother (“Nannie”) to eleven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Elsmarie was enthusiastic about watercolor painting, stitching, and card making. She was also a fabulous cook and baker and loved to tend her gardens. In lieu of flowers, and because there will be no gathering until spring, please consider planting a colorful plant at your home next spring in her memory. She would love to look down and see the colors.
