Obituary: Elizabeth “Betty” Marie Simi

Elizabeth “Betty” Marie Simi, age 94, passed away on June 24th, 2019 at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock, Michigan.

She was born on November 6th, 1924 in Lake Linden, MI to Francis and Rebecca (Riopelle) Henry. She attended the Calumet High school until her mother’s death, at which time she dropped out to raise her six siblings. Betty married the love of her life, Eino “Nick” Simi on December 16th, 1944. They lived in White Pine for a number of years where she worked as a cashier at the Paolia’s Store, then as a nanny for the Pierpont family. In 1977, Betty graduated from the White Pine High School with her high school diploma. She and Eino moved to Nisula to live on the Simi farm, then to Hancock, MI where she has remained up until her death.

Though Betty never had children of her own, she is remembered fondly as a mother by many. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, embroidery, and playing cards. She also volunteered her time as a Girl Scout leader, and had a wonderful sense of humor.

Surviving are her brother-in-law Erwin (Janet) Simi of Alpena, MI; sister-in-law Esther Lepisto of Sacramento, CA; her beloved “adopted” daughter Carrie Sikkila of Nisula, MI, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded by her parents; loving husband; and her siblings.

Services for Betty will take place at the Mission United Lutheran Church in Pelkie, MI on Saturday, June 29th. Visitation will begin at Noon, until her service at 1 o’clock officiated by Rev. Kellan Weyer. There will be a luncheon at the church directly following the service, and burial will take place at 3pm at the Nisula Cemetery. Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements until the time of her services.
