Eleanor J Hughes, a longtime local resident, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, September 4, 2021, at her home in Indian Rocks Beach, Florida after a short illness.
Eleanor was born August 8, 1928, in Baraga, Michigan to parents Waino Komula and Hannah Yoki Komula. She graduated from Baraga Highschool at age 15 and attended Suomi before moving to Detroit in 1947. There she met her husband of 60 years, Evan Hughes. They married in 1948 and moved back to Chassell in 1956 where they resided until they moved to Florida in 1983.
Eleanor was the church secretary at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church for many years and was instrumental in the project to build the new church in it’s current location. She was an avid golfer and continued until a few years ago.
Evan preceded her in death in 2008.
She is survived by her children, Ron, (Sharon), Kathleen, (Craig Varady), David, (Lennon); grandchildren, Robinson (Jennifer), Telo Wyffels,(Ty), Ian, (Andrea), Alex; great-grandchildren, Abigail, Robinson Jr, Violet Wyffels; sister in-laws, Mary Ann Komula, Joyce Baker (Don): and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations to a local hospice chapter or to Gloria Dei. Lutheran Church in Hancock, MI.
The memorial service will be on October 9, 2021, at 11:00 am at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock. Visitation will take place from 10:00 am until the time of services at the church.
