Obituary: Eileen “Judy” Austin

Chassell

Eileen “Judy” Austin, 88, a resident of Chassell passed away Thursday July 9, 2020, at home following a lengthy illness.

She was born on May 5, 1932, in Chassell, a daughter of the late Edmond and Maud (Schannenk) Friday. Judy was a graduate of the Chassell High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Soumi College.
On May 27, 1950, she was united in marriage to Stephen “Don” Austin. The couple resided in Chassell where they raised their family. On June 14, 2005, Don preceded Judy in death.

Judy was a lifelong member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church of Chassell. She had worked as a CNA for Portage View Hospital and the Houghton County Medical Care Facility until her retirement at the age of 72. She enjoyed a lifetime of family, friends, her grandkids and chocolate!

She was also preceded in death by her son James Austin, her son-in-law Russell Ruotsi and her daughter-in-law Darlene Austin.

Surviving her are:
Her children: Stephen Austin Jr., Cheri Ruotsi, Shelby (John) Turnquist, Michelle (Murray) Gillis and Craig (Kristina) Austin.
Her daughter-in-law Gail Austin.
Her 14 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Her brother-in-law John Austin.
Her numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and family friends Jean Pekkala and Myrna Godnek.

Due to Covid constraints a private Mass of Christian Burial for Judy will be held at St. Anne’s Catholic Church of Chassell with Fr. Ben Hasse to officiate. Burial will be in the Chassell Cemetery.

Friends may call on Monday, July 13, 2020 at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Chassell from 3:30pm to 4:30pm.
