Edward R. “Ed” Hulkonen Sr. age 94, a resident of Nisula went peacefully home to be with his Lord on Friday, December 8, 2023. Ed was born on July 20, 1929 to the late Henry and Hilda (Juntunen) Hulkonen of Nisula. He earned the rank of army sergeant as he served in Korea from 1950-52. Ed married Shirley Kemppainen on September 20, 1952 at the Laurium Apostolic Lutheran Church Parsonage. Ed and Shirley raised four children as they farmed the Hulkonen Homestead for 39 years, retiring in 1996. He was a part time bus driver for 21 years with L’Anse Area Schools. Ed was a member of the Alston Apostolic Lutheran Church where he served as Chairman of the Board and treasurer for numerous years.
Ed is survived by his three daughters Colleen (Phil) Creech of Marquette, Valerie (Gary) Valine of Superior, WI and Mavis (Phil) Luurtsema of Saline, MI, one son Edward (Anita) Hulkonen Jr. of Nisula, 14 grandchildren Sara (Bill) Lautner, Rachel (Derek) Koltvedt, Hannah (Jon) Kol, Ruth (Corey) Pline , Adam (Erinn) Valine, Anna (Andres) Landeros, Joshua (Ramona) Hulkonen, Jason (Kendra) Hulkonen, Rebecca (Levi) Hupp, Lindsey (Cole) Shafer, Alina (Keith) Kooperman, Amanda (Kevin) Stout, Allison Luurtsema and Andrea (John) Holt, 26 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Fay Kemppainen and Dottie Kemppainen. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, his parents, four sisters: Sylvia Curtin, Helmie Hospenthal, Linda Wade and Mildred Lampinen, seven brothers: Urho, Gunnard, Weikko, Toivo, Sulo, Aimo, and Art.
Funeral services for Edward will be held at 12 pm Saturday, December 16, 2023 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Pastor Ed Hulkonen Jr. officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral chapel on Saturday from 10 am until time of the service. Immediately following the funeral service, the family invites friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon in the Harrington Gathering Room, located at the funeral chapel.
Interment will take place in the Nisula Cemetery in the spring of 2024.
