Obituary: Edith Maki

Edith I. (Edward) Maki, 71, a resident of Franklin Township, passed away Sunday, September 26, 2021, at the Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium following a short illness.
She was born on December 9, 1949, in Elk River, MN, a daughter of the late Melvin and Linda (Hendrickson) Niska. Edith was raised in Montrose, MN, and was a graduate of the Buffalo High School with the class of 1967.
Following High School, Edith worked for the Federal Reserve before moving to Finland to be a nanny and work in a bakery.
On September 4, 1971, she was united in marriage to Ed Maki. The couple resided in the Detroit area for three years before moving to make their home in Franklin Township to raise their family.
Edith enjoyed cooking, baking, working in her garden, traveling, singing and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also had owned and operated the Spice of Life Bakery for several years.
Preceding her in death were her grandchildren: Lanaya Maki and Brooke Foley; her parents; her siblings; Evelyn Wilen, Charles Niska, Elsie Muonio Victor Niska and Marian Halberg.
Surviving are: Her husband: Edward Maki of Franklin Township; Her children: Elsa (Doug) Foley of Ethel, WA, Eevi Maki of Moscow, ID, Anders (Anita) Maki Norwood, MN, Alvar (Colleen) Maki of Ishpeming, MI, Aric (Tauni) Maki of Brush Prairie, WA, Aleta Maki of Moscow, ID, Annika Maki of Moscow, ID, Ayla Maki of Moscow, ID; 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; Her brothers & sisters: Melvin (Esther) Niska, Annette (Dave) Carlson,Lila (Wayne) Schmidt, Lenny (Selina) Niska, JC (Gary) Johnson, Lois Niska, Eunice (John) Burns; Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins
A Funeral Service for Edith will be held 11:00 am Thursday, September 30, 2021, at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church in Hancock. Burial will be in the Jacobsville Cemetery.
Friends may call on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, from 6 to 8:00 pm at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church of Hancock.
