Obituary: Dorothy Ylitalo

Dorothy Ylitalo of Hancock went to be with Jesus, Tuesday, December 1, 2020, at the age of 92 due to complications from Parkinson’s. Dorothy was born in Wisconsin on December 9, 1927, to the late Mary and Fred Eakin. She attended Stanton Township School and graduated from Hancock. She married Wilho Ylitalo on November 22, 1944.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wilho, son-in-law, Dave Carlson, grand-daughter, Kristen Carlson, siblings, William, David, and Elsie Luoma, sisters-in-law, Catherine Eakin, Josephine Eakin, Eva Wakeham, Sally Ylitalo, Edna Ylitalo, Amelia Ylitalo, brothers-in-law: Jack Wakeham, Laurie Wiitala, Earl Smith, Pete Luoma, Oscar Ylitalo, Walfred Ylitalo, and Erik Ylitalo.

She is survived by her daughters: Mary Ann (Dave) Quayle of Hancock/Florida, Patricia Carlson of Hancock, Cindy (Lantz) Whitfield of Marquette. Also, grandchildren: Craig (Chrissanne) Hosking, Mark Hosking, Brian (Lena) Hosking, Pam (Steve) Herzog, Kevin (Mirka) Carlson, Brooke Carlson, Courtney Whitfield, Allison (J.T.) Blassingame, Lindsey (Rob) Morrow, Kaylee (Brent) Mather. And great-grand-children: Alex & Amber, Molly, Elwood & Agatha, Amanda, Davide, & Matteo, Lilly, Boden & Jonah. Also, surviving siblings: John (Vivian), Fred, George (June), & Harold (Fran), Mabel Wakeham, Lilly Wiitala, Vera Smith, & Loretta (Jim) Laplander. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock and had been active in their Quilters Group and Social Ministry and Little Brothers. She lived most of her married life in Hancock and was employed in the Hot Lunch Program for 21 years at the Hancock High School until her retirement in 1991.

She was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed visiting her immediate family and her sisters and brothers and their families.

For the past 10 years, Dorothy has been a resident of Canal View in Hancock. We want to thank Dr. Kass and the staff at Canal View for the compassionate care she received, especially when her family couldn’t be there.

Memorials can be sent to the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock.

A memorial service will be held sometime in the spring. The Memorial Chapel and Plowe Funeral Homes of Hancock is assisting the family with the arrangements.
