Obituary: Dorothy Maki

Dorothy B. Maki, 96, a resident of Houghton passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at the Omega House in Houghton.

She was born on April 20, 1925, in Tapiola, a daughter of the late Victor and Anna (Torro) Petrelius. She attended the John A. Doelle School. She left the area to lower Michigan and spent 30 plus years working and living in the Detroit & Southfield areas.

On February 7, 1948, she was united in marriage to Rudolph Beltari, he passed away on June 3, 1959. On May 29, 1969, she married Evert Maki. The couple moved to Pelkie in 1973 and he passed away in 1977. In 1998 Dorothy moved to Houghton.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husbands were her brothers Edsel, Richard and Robert Petrelius and two sisters Margaret Mattila and Ruth Hanka and many other loved ones.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Hancock and the Doelle Senior Citizens of Tapiola.

Surviving are:

Her sister: Hazel Tepsa of Houghton

Her brother: Donald (Carol) Petrelius of Houghton

Her aunt: Dorine Torro of Fenton, MI

Her step-children: Gerry (Carla) Maki, Pamela Walsh and Sandy (Bill) Lester

Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services for Dorothy will be held 11 am Monday, February 14, 2022, at the Zion Lutheran Church of Hancock with Pastor Jessie Aho to officiate. Spring graveside services will be held Saturday, May 21, 2022, in the Pelkie Cemetery with Pastor Jesse Aho to officiate.

Friends may call on Monday, February 14, 2022, at the Zion Lutheran Church of Hancock from 10 am until time of services.

Dorothy’s family would like to thank the staff of the Omega House for the wonderful and compassionate care given to her during her stay.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorials be given to the Omega House or the Camp Lahti Retreat Center.
