Obituary: Doris Julio

As received from the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home:

Doris Julio, 86, of Laurium, passed away on Wednesday March 24, 2021 at the Omega House surrounded by her family.

Doris was born on June 12, 1934 in Lake Linden, MI and was the twelfth child of thirteen born to Mary Louise (Bourdeau) and Arthur Baril.  She attended and graduated from Lake Linden schools. After graduation, Doris worked at the Lakes Pharmacy and then briefly moved and worked in the Ferndale area. Upon her return Doris then worked for the Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) in Houghton.

She met Donald Julio and later married him on July 23, 1960 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden.  They made their home and raised their family in Laurium.  Family was always first with Doris, and she and Don made wonderful memories for their family.  Picnics, beaches and exploring were a few of the many weekend outings for the family.  Afterwards, Don would put together a slide show and we all gathered around to relive the fun times.  After their children were raised, Doris returned to work at UPPCO until her retirement in 1993 where she worked as a secretary in the Operations and Engineering departments.  Doris and Don enjoyed live music and dancing.  They made many wonderful trips to polka festivals in Wisconsin and Minnesota.  They enjoyed themselves at the Eagles in South Range, dancing most weekends.  Doris and Don spent their time together until Don passed away on September 30, 2008.

In her later years, Doris volunteered her time to the Alter Society of St. Paul’s Apostle parish and also the Aspirus Hospital Gift Shop, where she enjoyed working with the hospital ladies.  She also cherished her time with her friends Gale and Shirley and the friendship they shared over the years. Doris will also be missed by all the children she touched at her daughter’s day care.

Doris was proceeded in death by her husband Don, her son-in-law Dwayne Hokenson, her mother and father, and also by eleven brothers and sisters, Clara (Robert) LaSage, Stella (John) Scott, Rubin (Doris) Baril, May (Peter) Able, Florence (Albert) Murn, Robert (Anne) Baril, Dorothy (Anthony) LeChevalier, Edward (Muriel) Baril, Irene (Robert) Schnotala, Lionel (infant) and Madeline (infant).

Doris is survived by her five children, Steven (Robin) Julio of Champlin, Minnesota, Vicky (Chris) Roy of Hancock, Jean Hokenson of Houghton, Michael (Amy) Julio of Gilbert, Arizona, and James Julio of Orlando, Florida; nine grandchildren, Gina Julio, Sophia Julio, Jordan (Brianne) Roy, Alex (Anica) Roy, Kevin (Michelle) Hokenson, Eric Hokenson, Nicholas Hokenson, Nicole Julio, and Amber (Joe) Tomory, and five great-grandchildren, Vera Hokenson, Theo Roy, Gianna Roy, Bennett Roy, and Owen Tomory. Doris is also survived by her brother, Urban “Tibby” (Carole) Baril of Hubbell and will be immensely missed by her many nieces and nephews who always loved spending time with Auntie Dorie.

Doris’s family would also like to acknowledge her wonderful neighbors and friends on First and Iroquois Streets who would look after her.
