Obituary: Dorene C. Butler

Dorene C. Butler, 74, a former resident of Laurium, peacefully passed away surrounded by her family Saturday evening May 4, 2019, at the Delaware House of Portage Pointe in Hancock where she had been a resident patient for the past six years.

She was born on November 5, 1944, in Hancock, a daughter of the late Alvin and Alice (Opie) Murphy.  Dorene was raised in Hancock and was a graduate of the Hancock High School with the class of 1963.  She then attended Suomi College and received her teaching certificate from Northern Michigan University.

Dorene then began a teaching career with the CLK school district teaching second grade education, before retiring from the Mohawk School after 27 years of teaching due to her health problems.

On August 5, 1978, she was united in marriage to William Butler.  The couple had resided in Laurium were they raised their daughter.  On February 11, 2014, William preceded Dorene in death.

Mrs. Butler was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in Hancock and was a very avid fan of the Green Bay Packers.

Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, her aunt Delores Hamilton and her nephew Brent Powles and her brothers in law Malcom and Ron.

Surviving are: her daughter: Nicole Butler of Laurium, her brother: David (Marilyn) Murphy of Hancock, Sister in law: Daisy Butler of Traverse City, Brother in law Virgil (JoAnn) Butler of Cadillac and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services for Dorene will be held 11 am Thursday, May 9, 2019, at the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in Hancock with Pastor TJ Stauffer to officiate.  Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Hancock.

In lieu of flowers Dorene’s family would appreciate donations be sent to The MS Society.

Friends may call on Thursday, May 9, 2019, from 10 am until time of services at the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in Hancock.

Dorene’s family would like to thank the staff and caregivers of Portage Pointe, Portage Home Health and Hospice and Dr. Douglas McKenzie for the care given to her during her illness.
