Donald B. LeMay, age 86, of Chassell, Michigan passed away on January 16th surrounded by his family.
Donald was born in Ishpeming, MI. He graduated from Ishpeming High School and went on to graduate with Honors obtaining a degree in Mining Engineering from Michigan Technological University.
He is survived by his loving wife Carole whom he met while attending MTU, of 65 years, his son John (Gina) Chassell, MI, and daughters, Donna (Mike) Cherry, MN, Caroline (Joe), Duluth, MN and Helen (Kevin), St. Paul, MN and grandchildren, Jack, Alex, Andrea and Grace along with other family and friends.
Donald served in the army and ROTC before embarking on his mining career, where he began as a mining engineer in the copper mines of San Manuel, Az. From there, he became the Superintendent of the Tracy Mine in Negaunee, MI and McKinley Mine and later transferred to Northern Minnesota where he became the manager of the Northwest Ore Division for LTV Steel until retirement.
He was a true outdoorsman and enthusiast of travel. He was a native of Ishpeming and past resident of Virginia and Biwabik, Mn and Saddlebrooke/Tucson, Az. He made Chassell, Michigan his home so he could tend to his Nestoria camp which was his “happy place”. Family, four-wheeling, hunting, fishing, gold digging and world traveler made up special aspects of his life. Don was dedicated to his family and enjoyed sharing his vast knowledge and unique skills. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his family and friends and in our hearts forever. There will be a memorial service this Spring in Ishpeming, MI.
