As received from the Jacobson Funeral Home:
Debra (Debbie) Lynn Heikkila, age 61, of Baraga, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at her home.
She was born March 21, 1962, in Annapolis, Maryland, the daughter of Darwin and Donna (Paul) Heikkila. Debbie grew up in Baraga and lived in Orlando, Florida, for many years, where she worked for the U.S. Postal Service and in the food industry. In 2021, she moved back to Baraga to be close to family again.
Debbie’s time raising her son Michael in Florida was one of her proudest accomplishments. She was a second mom to his friends, who offered her support when they had no one else to turn to. She took them to their first skate parks, wouldn’t hesitate to answer their calls when they needed a ride home, and ensured they had a childhood full of adventure and great memories. She was selfless, and anything that was important to Michael was important to her.
In recent years, Debbie enjoyed quiet time in her apartment overlooking Lake Superior with her cat. Her son, a professional photographer, inspired Debbie to take up a hobby in photography. She took many beautiful photos of the Lake year-round and observed the beautiful sunrises, sunsets, and wildlife. She enjoyed caring for her garden, growing tomatoes and herbs outside her front door. She also enjoyed puzzles, crafting, and spending time with family and friends.
Debbie is survived by her son Michael Heikkila and his longtime partner Jamie Paakkonen of Brooklyn, New York; sister Diane Velmer and her boyfriend Bill Raymond of L’Anse; nephew Derrick Velmer; and many cousins.
Preceding her in death are her parents, Darwin and Donna (Moe), and a brother, Donald Heikkila.
Her funeral service will be held on Friday, September 29, at 1:00 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home, with Pastor Dave Hoskins officiating. Visitation will be from 12-1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Elo Cemetery.
