David Daniel Sarya, age 73 of Pelkie, MI passed away on Friday, October 6, 2017 at his home.
He was born September 17, 1944 in L’Anse, MI son to Rupert and Ellen (Heikka) Sarya. David graduated from Baraga High School in 1962.
He was in the US Army during Vietnam Era, serving from 1965 to 1967, in the 196 Lt. Infantry. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Medical Badge, Expert (Rifle M14), Vietnam Service Medal, (2) Purple Heart, and Good Conduct Medal.
Following the service, he returned to Pelkie to work on the family farm. He attended machinist school in Marquette and then moved to Milwaukee where he began work at Evinrude. He married the former Ruth Koski on September 18, 1971. He was a police officer for the City of Milwaukee; after 34 years with the department he retired and moved back to Pelkie in 2001.
David was an avid outdoorsman, he loved deer hunting, fishing, bird hunting, collecting antlers, and feeding the deer. He was also a sports fanatic, over the years he played, softball, tennis, basketball, football, bowling, and shooting pool.
Surviving are his wife Ruth Sarya of Pelkie; children, Dianne Priest of Chilton, WI, David Dingena of Milwaukee, Daniel Dingena of Eagle, MI, Kari Faber-Sarya of Rochester, MN; grandchildren, Ashley, Allison, Angela, and Luis; and 9 great grandchildren. Preceding him in death are his parents; brothers Allen and Ronald Sarya.
Private family services were held. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
