Obituary: Dan Tuohimaa

Houghton Canal

     Dan Tuohimaa, 55, a resident of the Houghton Canal passed away Monday September 9, 2019, at UP Health Marquette Hospital following a lengthy illness.

     He was born on September 22, 1963, in Hancock a son of the late Robert and Marie (Romppainen) Tuohimaa.  Dan was raised in Coles Creek and attended the South Ranges Schools graduating in 1981 from Jeffers High School.  He then attended Soumi College, Central Michigan University and Ferris State University.

     Dan had worked as a mechanic in Massachusetts and locally for Bruno’s Motor’s. He also worked for Eric Brown Contracting.  In 1997, Dan began a career working for Isle Royale National Park Service where he had worked as a carpenter, as part of the dock crew on the Island and in town, as a deckhand on the boat and a maintenance person on the island and in town.  Retiring after 21 years.

    Dan enjoyed being outdoors hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.  He was a former member of the Stanton Township Volunteer Fire Department, enjoyed playing hockey and was a veteran of the ONHL.

     Preceding him in death were his parents Robert and Marie Tuohomaa and his sister Cathy Tuohimaa.

                   Jane Lake of Hancock 

                   Julie (David) Laban of Oskar Bay 

                   Dianne (Dan) Jamison of Atlantic Mine

                   His brother-in-law: Charles Huhta of the Houghton Canal

          Numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins

     A graveside service for Dan will be held 12:00 pm Saturday, September 14, 2019, at the Oskar Cemetery with David Laban to officiate, followed by a time to remember Dan and a luncheon at the Stanton Township Fire Hall.
