Cheryl Spry, 61, a resident of Calumet passed away peacefully at home on Thursday October 8, 2020. She battled MS with stubbornness and determination for more than 25 years. She lost her battle following a recent cancer diagnosis.
She was born on February 12, 1959 to Melvin and Lorraine (Maki) Hirvela. She was the first grandchild of Richard and Esther Maki. She attended the local schools and graduated from Calumet High School with the Class of 1977. She then went on to attend Suomi College, Northern Michigan University, and received her Masters Degree from the University of Iowa. On June 18, 1991, she was united in marriage to Greg Spry.
Cheryl loved cryptograms, watching jeopardy, doing crosswords and playing cashwords. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and reading. She loved spending time with her nieces and nephews.
She attended the Grace Christian Fellowship in Calumet.She is preceded in death by her dad Melvin Hirvela, her husband Greg, her niece Mandy Kela, and her cousins Tim Hirvela, Doug Sintkowski and Jarod Lompre.

Her daughter: Rachel (Todd) Bransford of Gallatin, TN
Her grandson: William Bransford
Sisters: Diane (Bruce) Bykkonen of CalumetPaula (Tim) Huls of Calumet

Brother: Brian Hirvela (Jon Koskiniemi) of Laurium
Brother in law: John Spry of Westland, Michigan
Special cousin and caregiver: Carol Fowler of Calumet
And numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 Sunday June 20, 2021 at the Siskiwit Reception Hall with Pastor Glen Schwanke to officiate. Visitation will be held from 3:00 until the time of the service on Sunday June 20, 2021 at the Siskiwit Reception Hall.
We would like to acknowledge and thank her Tuesday night ‘family’. You were an important part of her life and she looked forward to it each week. We also want to thank Peggy at UPCAP, the Home care workers, and Dr Bonnie Hafeman for all they did for Cheryl.
