Obituary: Charles Loonsfoot, Sr.

Charles A. Loonsfoot, Sr. age 82 of Baraga, MI passed away at his home on Wednesday, October 13, 2021. Charles was surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Baraga on April 24, 1939 the son of the late Joseph and Pearl (Nedeau) Loonsfoot. Charles graduated from Baraga High School. Charles had proudly served in the National Guard. Charles had been employed as a treatment counselor at New Day Treatment Center, L’Anse retiring in 1995. He was a member of Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Assinins., MI, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, and the Ojibwa Senior Citizens Center. He had served on the KBIC Tribal Council for 12 years and had been vice president for 1 year. Charles loved making maple syrup and Lugg (bread), making his fudge at Christmas that he was famous for, cooking venison, hunting, fishing including commercial fishing, walking and was an avid Green Bay Packer fan.

Charles is survived by his wife Marilyn (Shalifoe) Loonsfoot, children Charles (Olivia) Loonsfoot, Jr of Baraga, Vincent Michael Loonsfoot of Baraga, Melissa (Paul) Koepp of Marquette, Rodney (Jammie) Loonsfoot of Baraga, Andrew Loonsfoot of L’Anse (Cindy Knapp), Dawn (Dan) Alexander of Baraga and Richard (Krissy) Loonsfoot of Baraga, step children Jacqueline (Chris) Swartz of Baraga and Marilyn Uren of Ontonagon, grandchildren Chris, Tony, Teresa, Vincent Jr., Alicia, Joel, Jami, Donald Jr., Tammy, Steven, Tanya, Jessica, Joey, Misty, Char, Richard, Danny, Cassie, R.C. Jr., Nathan and Joey, step grandchildren Brandon, Crystal and Stuart, numerous great grandchildren, brothers Bernard (Maria) “Beaver” Loonsfoot of Chicago, and Eugene “Cowboy” (Katie) Loonsfoot of Baraga. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, his 1st wife Karen Marie Hugo, siblings Donna “Sister” Kinnunen, Joseph” Sonny” Loonsfoot, Jeanette “Gally” Stevens, Joan”Bubbles” Gauthier and Anthony ”Tony Bags” Loonsfoot, and step grandson Michael Uren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church with Father Corey Litzner, celebrant. The family will greet friends at the church on Tuesday from 12 p.m. until the time of the Mass. Immediately following Mass, Baraga County area veterans, under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post #444 will conduct military honors in the Assinins Cemetery. Following the interment, the family invites friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon at the Zeba Hall.
