Charles “Herbie” Kangas, 89, of South Range, passed away on October 25, 2020. He was born on June 23, 1931, in Toivola, to Joel and Esther Kangas.
He married the former Nancy Sleeman on October 25, 1952.
Herbie served in the United States Marines for two years, stationed at Camp Lejeune. He also was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 324 for 62 years.
Herbie was employed as a heavy equipment operator, working for Mattila Construction, Hocking Construction and Herman Gundlach Construction,
where he retired after 25 years of service.
He was a founding member of the Range Snowmobile Club, and an avid Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Tigers and Green Bay Packers fan.
Herbie was preceded in death by his mother and father; wife, Nancy; brother, Robert; and sisters, Doris Andreini and Janet Kestner.
He is survived by sons, Dennis (Jane) Kangas of Appleton, Wisconsin, Randy (Joanne) Kangas of Katy, Texas and Terry Kangas of Katy, Texas; three grandsons, Kevin (Lauren) Kangas of Appleton, Wisconsin, and their two daughters, Nora and Hattie; Nathan Kangas and his son, Dean of Richmond, Texas and Ryan Kangas of Katy, Texas.
