Charles (Chuck) William Snider, age 84 of Skanee, MI passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2020 at Canal View – Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock, MI. He was born in Detroit, MI on August 11, 1935 to Virgil and Barbara (Ironside) Snider. He grew up in Taylor, MI. Chuck joined the Navy in 1952 and took his Basic Training at Great Lakes Naval Base in Chicago, IL. However, Chuck was released with an Honorable Discharge due to a medical condition. He then married Donna J. Fredrickson who was born and raised in Skanee, MI on August 10, 1957. They were married 38 years until her passing in 1995.. They had 5 children, Cheri, Lori, Danny, Suzi and Chuck, 8 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren. Chuck was a Master Carpenter most of his life having done all phases of carpentry but especially finish carpentry. Some of his finish work was published in Better Homes and Gardens. He has worked and lived in many states (including Michigan, California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Indiana) as he always gravitated to where there was a housing boom. Chuck learned his beginning carpentry skills from his father who worked for Ford Motor Co as a carpenter. Carpentry was not just an occupation but a passion for Chuck utilizing great pride and craftsmanship in his work. He then taught his son’s carpentry and his son Chuck worked with him many years. His son Danny is also a good carpenter and enjoys woodworking. Chuck met his wife Donna down-state who was from the U.P. in 1955 and had been coming to the U.P. ever since. He moved to Skanee in 1999 and had his own business with his son Chuck called “Skanee Wood Works”. Chuck worked until he was 75 years old. His hobbies included woodworking, bowling, collecting old die-cast cars, his love of classic cars and Nascar racing. Chuck drove a race car when he was young racing mostly at Flat Rock Speedway in Flat Rock, MI and other local tracks. He attained a Nascar license but did not pursue it as a career. He has attended many Nascar races and has followed Nascar since it began in 1948. Chuck is preceded in death by his parents Virgil and Barbara; and his wife of 38 years, Donna. He is survived by his five children, Cheryl Snider of Skanee, Lori (James) Eaton of Skanee, Daniel (Susan) Snider of Spring, TX, Susan (Shane) Smith of Crosby, TX, and Charles Snider of Skanee. His 8 grandchildren, Timothy (Jacquelyn) Flynn of Gorham , Maine, Nicole (Flynn) Hooks of L’Anse, MI, Michelle Guthrie (Greg) of Houston, TX, Shane Young of Humble, TX, Justin and Matthew Snider of Austin, TX, , Michael (Amy) Neel of Humble, TX , and Jeremy Neel of Crosby, TX. 10 great-grandchildren, Brian, Krystal, Davyn, Makayla, Dylan, Ashlyn, Taya, Jack, Tessa, and Makenzie. Brothers, Richard Snider of Taylor, MI, Donald (Mary Jane) Snider of Taylor, MI, Larry Snider of Southgate, MI; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service and burial will be held in the Skanee Cemetery later this spring. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
