Obituary: Catherine Sandretto

Catherine Sandretto, 93, a resident of Calumet passed away on Friday August 6, 2021 at Canal View – Houghton County.

She was born on November 4, 1927 in Calumet to Jacob and Frances (Gerdesich) Vertin. She attended the local schools and graduated from Sacred Heart High School with the Class of 1945.

On October 9, 1948 she was united in marriage to Basil Sandretto at Sacred Heart Church in Calumet.

Catherine worked as a waitress at the Miscowaubic Club for many years, retiring in 1989. After retirement, she and Basil enjoyed spending their winters in Florida and the summers in Calumet. They continued their trips to Florida until health ailments prevented them from traveling. She also enjoyed baking and cooking.

She is preceded in death by her parents Jacob and Frances Vertin, her husband Basil, son Basil Jr, her brothers Jacob Jr., John, Joseph, William, Peter, Frank, and Matt, and her sisters Frances (Shorty) Hukkanen and Mary (Mim) Poshak.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Calumet.

She is survived by:

Don (Rae) Sandretto of Ishpeming
Bill (Sherry) Sandretto of Calumet
5 grandchildren: Steven Sandretto, Michael Sandretto, Angela (Chris) Eagling, Jesse (Shannon) Sandretto and Allen (Mila) Grinus
3 great grandchildren: Jake and Alli Eagling, Holly Sandretto, and Vince Grinus

The Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday August 10, 2021 at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Gracious Pulimoottil to officiate.

A private burial will take place in the Lake View Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Canal View – Houghton County for the compassionate care they gave Catherine.
